Sample from Financial Aid, What is it? Report:
"Financial aid consists of scholarships, grants, loans, and employment opportunities that are available to help students pay for the cost of attending school. Financial Aid is based on need, and is meant to supplement, not replace, the financial resources of the family.

Two types of need-based financial aid are available; self-help aid and gift aid. Eligibility is governed by federal guidelines that every campus is required to follow. It is important to evaluate the aid package from each campus to determine which offers the best opportunity. Two colleges can offer the same dollar amount of aid. One might have 20% grants and 80% loans, the other may offer 30% grants, 10% scholarships and 60% loans. Loans require repayment, grants and scholarships are free. Which presents the least money out of your pocket? Because of the way some scholarships are offered, they may be taxable as income. Inquire and negotiate. Check out the CPR site calculators to assist you to evaluate these offers. In addition to this report refer to the Special Report, “The FAFSA Process”."
